With this one here you actually get to enjoy the best of both worlds on just a single piece of furniture. If you have a sofa bed or you have decided to get a sofa bed, you should understand that these are designed for heavy use. They should be comfortable for you to be it when you are sitting, sleeping or lounging the quality of comfort should not differ.

You will find that sofa beds are just as comfortable as normal sofas and just as comfortable as your regular bed. Probably that’s why they are such a great idea for small living spaces or guest bedrooms. Now, however, if you are here that means you don’t really know how a sofa bed works and you need to figure out how they work is that not it? Well, then I guess we’ll have to look at that.

Now sofa beds are a great idea if you have limited space, just like a regular sofa. For example let’s say you just moved out and you’re starting an apartment of your own, or you generally have one small room with different sections. If you’re looking to save up space then I think this is the way to go.

Getting a sofa bed, is like getting a sofa and a bed at the same time at the price of only one. Sofa beds can act as sofas during the day and beds at night, so practically you have both and you won’t need to save up more money to get yet another bed, and waste up that space you’re trying to efficiently manage. So now that we have this part covered let’s check on other things, shall we?

Sofa Bed Opening Methods

So generally sofa beds are pretty straight forward. However, there are different types and styles of sofa beds out there as some tend to be traditional and all so it may be difficult to actually have a single opening method.

So, in general, there are three known common ways and mostly used mechanisms of opening sofa beds depending on if your sofa bed is a traditional, modern or a sliding sofa bed. So let’s look at the three methods and find which one you need. Please note that the methods used are used for different types of sofa beds and not that they work for all sofa beds.

Pull-Out Bed Method

So this pull out bed method is most common for the traditional sofa bed. It’s the method we all grew up with for the standard industrial sofa bed. It’s basically standard for good reason I mean it’s easy to understand and also very easy to master. So this is how it should normally work.

First, you have to remove the sofa cushions from the back and base of your sofa. Just lift the cushions and set them aside. You’ll find the spring-loaded metal frame with the mattress folded underneath. So grip the metal bars with both hands and pull it up and out of the sofa at the same time.

The bed frame will slide right out as you pull. Basically a pair of legs come down and will fold into place. Leaving you to fold the rest of the mattress and the second set of legs should fall right out as well. Now since that has been settled and done with you now just have to pull or grab the top of the mattress that would have been folded over and simply pull it out and away from the sofa and onto the bed frame.

However, some versions of these standard and traditional sofas may have a lever which you can just unlock and pull to unlock the folded bed and mattress. You may also find fabric straps that will be on the folded section of the mattress which may need untying to fully unfold the mattress. Like any regular clip, these are designed to keep the mattress from unfolding whilst on the sofa so be very careful when you remove or untie them.

So since we are done and we have set the mattress on the bed frame we finally have our bed but just be certain and try pulley the bed frame further again to see if it locks incase it may slip up and unfold back in but if there is no clicking sound then I am certain you have your sofa bed in night mode ready to host you the entire evening.

Unfolding Method

So some know these sofa beds as the easy to open sofa beds mostly because the whole process of turning it to a bed will take you no more than ten seconds. You’ll find that these sofa beds that use this method are mostly the modern sofa beds that are made for your convenience and to make work for you less harder using modern mechanisms. So let’s see how this one works.

You’ll find that most modern sofa beds have a fold-over movement in which the mattress is folded to make the cushions hence there really is no need to remove any of the cushions because they are the mattress. So you either have the easiest version in which you just pull forward at the top of the back cushion and the bed practically unfolds itself. Or you have the one in which you may have to find a lever underneath the front of the sofa or at the top back of the sofa.

In case it’s a futon then it’s probably on the side of the sofa. However, some newer and higher-end models can work with a remote or a button and you’ll be good to go. So anyways, pull the handle or push it down and keep it held down until the bed has been unlocked. Rotate the sofa bed until it won’t move further than usual when the sofa bed is now parallel and flat out. Do this until you hear a click sound ensuring that the sofa won’t fold back while you are sleeping on it.

So there you have it, its an easy and faster method as compared to the industrial one isn’t it. At this stage, all you can do is add your blankets and your pillows and you’re ready for a good night’s sleep.

Open and Slide Method

Like regular sofas, you will find that sofa beds can come in different styles including as sectionals or as l-shaped sofas and that’s where this method comes in. It’s a very easy method that is designed or that is used mostly on sofas beds that come as l-shaped sofas. So already you know that if your sofa bed is not a sectional nor is it l-shaped you may have to check on the other methods.

So here we go, to open a sofa bed that uses the pen and slide method you will first have to locate where the mattress is and under normal circumstances, you will find it underneath the longer length of the sofa.

Basically you should understand that these sofas will store an additional cushion under the bed to create a mattress. So anyways find the storage unit and bring it out, you should probably pull it out until you find that you can’t pull it out anymore. You might find situated there, use those to pull out the mattress but if you can’t find any straps then it may be wise to find a way to pull the mattress out. This is the final stage, as you pull the hidden cushion out continue pulling until you hear a click sad which means that it now secure into place and will not slide back in.

The locking technique is automatic so you won’t have to worry about being slid back into your couch.

Well after that all that’s really left is for you to set up your pillows and all, get that movie that you want or novel lay back and relax until the sandman comes to get you. So that basically how to open a sofa bed especially if it happens to be an l-shaped or sectional sofa bed.

Why Three Methods for a Sofa Bed?

Well, every sofa bed is generally and basically unique, you won’t find the levers in the same place, some may not even click when locking. But the difference is really, all the same, you just have to know what to do with the particular piece and the type of sofa bed you have. As I stated you’ll find that traditional sofa beds will make use of the pullout method more, modern sofas can work with the unfolding method more whereas the sectional sofa beds will make us of the open and slide method more. So just know the type your sofa bed is and you’ll be good to go.

Sofa or Sofa bed?

So Why Buy A Sofa Bed?

Well, firstly a sofa bed is just as comfortable as your regular sofa. or it could actually be more comfortable since they need thicker mattresses. Plus the fact that you are buying 2 pieces of furniture in that one set kinda makes the idea of getting a sofa bed seem more likeable, doesn’t it? Sofa beds are just as comfortable as a regular bed as well. But getting the bed instead will do away with issues like having to actually spread your bed in a daily, you can just fold your blankets away and tuck your mattress in and you’re done. So talk about time convenient as well.

Sofa beds look more like a sofa than a bed. They are designed as traditional sofas so you can still design your living room and make it a masterpiece without actually having to feel like everyone can see the bed within it. This aids it in terms of functionality and practicality, so you have a guest bed ready and on the go. You’ll see that with a sofa bed it’s actually a great choice if you know that you normally have guests over and they may need a place to sleep and rest, or if you run a motel or hotel I think a sofa bed could be exactly what you need.

Lastly, with a sofa bed, you can actually create more space in your home without feeling cramped up. You can actually turn a crowded room to a more elegant one. I mean look at it this way, beds tend to take up more space in a room, and if you have a bed you are obviously going to need a sofa as well, and imagine the space that you are going to be taking up so why not get the best for the size of one. Generally, sofa beds are more efficient in terms of functionality and space-saving, you will never regret getting a sofa bed in terms of space.

Why Buy A Sofa?

So obviously in making such a decision to get yourself a sofa bed, you may be thinking that maybe getting a plain regular sofa isn’t such a bad idea. I’m not going to argue with you, nothing on this planet is perfect, even sofa beds have their loops and snoops.

You see, the sofas beds are quite large and heavier than the regular plain sofa. They are space-efficient because they rule out the need to get a bed and a sofa separately but they are almost impossible to move on your own. So if you’re someone who stays alone or who enjoys moving furniture when cleaning, are you sure you’d want the hustle of heavy weight lifting?

Also like a recliner, a sofa bed needs extra allowance as compared to a regular sofa, because you actually have to stretch it out to get the bed. You’ll find that with a regular sofa you can just set it out in the living room and no matter how cramped up you won’t have any issues. With a sofa bed, however, if you don’t have enough width in a room then you can’t stretch the bed and obviously it will seize its functionality as a sofa bed. It will just be a sofa, so why not just get yourself a sofa to start with.

Lastly unlike most sofas that have floor clearance, a sofa bed comes all the way to the bottom. Generally looking at a sofa bed it doesn’t look spacious at all. It looks heavy and you can’t actually place anything under it because of this.

Besides it already being a heavy piece, imagine those weekends where you just want to clean the whole house and you can’t move the sofa and you also can’t sweep under it. The frustration that it will cause especially if you have allergies and dust starts building up. So considering all these do you think you really need all that trouble?
